Most ozone exists in a stratospheric band between the altitudes of 10 and 50 km known as the ozone layer, which protects the earth’s ecosystem by partially absorbing biologically harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
JMA observes ozone and solar UV radiation at Tsukuba in Japan and Syowa Station in Antarctica, providing UV index forecasts for the current day and the next day, and hourly near real-time estimates using satellite ozone and surface solar duration measurements for the current day.
