Highlight

  • Annual mean temperatures were above normal in most parts of the world, and very high in East Asia, in Southeast Asia, in South Asia, in the Middle East, from Western Russia to Europe, from Northern Africa to southwestern Western Africa, in North America except Alaska and western Canada, from Central America to northern South America, in central South America and from Melanesia to the Australian coast.
  • Extremely high temperatures were frequently observed in areas where the annual mean temperatures were very high. (Map)
  • Annual precipitation amounts were above normal in northern East Asia, from Central Asia to South Asia, in the coastal areas of the Arabian Peninsula, from northern to central Europe, from the Caribbean countries to eastern Mexico, and in eastern Brazil, and below normal in northwestern Northern Africa and in northwestern Mexico.
  • Extremely high precipitation amounts were frequently observed in eastern China, in eastern Indonesia, in southern India, in the western part of Western Africa and in northern Chile. Extremely low precipitation amounts were frequently observed in northwestern Eastern Siberia, in northern Madagascar and in northern Brazil. (Map)

  • It was reported that Typhoon "GAEMI" in July, Typhoon "Yagi" in September, Typhoon "TRAMI" in October and heavy rains caused a total of at least 1,240 fatalities in China and Southeast Asian countries (EM-DAT).

  • It was reported that cold waves in March caused at least 1,190 fatalities in Afghanistan (EM-DAT).

  • The monthly mean temperatures in Turkey in April, June and July were the highest on record for respective months since 1971 (Turkish State Meteorological Service).
  • The monthly mean temperatures in Greece from June to August were the highest on record for respective months since 1960 (Hellenic National Meteorological Service).
  • The monthly mean temperatures in Romania in June and August were the highest on record for respective months since 1901 (National Meteorological Administration, Romania).
  • The monthly mean temperatures in Serbia from June to August were the highest on record for respective months since 1951 (Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia).

  • It was reported that heavy rains in October caused at least 230 fatalities in eastern Spain (EM-DAT).

  • The monthly precipitation amount in Spain in October was the highest on record for this month since 1961 (The State Meteorological Agency, Spain).

  • It was reported that heavy rains from March to September caused a total of at least 2,900 fatalities from northern Eastern Africa to Western Africa (EM-DAT).

  • The monthly mean temperatures in the southwestern USA in June and October were the highest on record for respective months since 1895 (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the USA).
  • The monthly mean temperature in the western USA in July was the highest on record for this month since 1895 (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the USA).
  • The seasonal mean temperature in the southwestern USA in summer (from June to August) was the highest on record for this season since 1895 (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the USA).

  • It was reported that Hurricane "HELENE" in September caused at least 220 fatalities in the southeastern USA (FEMA).

  • The monthly mean temperatures in Argentina in February, September and October were the highest on record for respective months since 1961 (National Meteorological Service of Argentina).

  • It was reported that wildfires caused at least 380 fatalities in Chile (EM-DAT).

  • The monthly mean temperature in Argentina in May was the lowest on record for this month since 1961 (National Meteorological Service of Argentina).
