Acid rain (Acid Deposition)
Acid rain is caused by sulfur oxide (SOx) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) , which react with airborne water droplets to produce acids. It adversely impacts the ecosystem by acidifying surface water and soil and by killing forests and aquatic life, causes damage to infrastructure by corroding metal and eroding concrete, and negatively affects human health.
The term acid rain is often used to refer to acid deposition, which encompasses both wet deposition and dry deposition. JMA analyzes the chemical components of precipitation (wet deposition) and dry deposition individually.
