Typhoons are usually generated over tropical ocean areas far south of Japan. An important role of MTSAT is to monitor typhoon; it provides precious obserbation data on such phenomena over the ocean, where ground-based observations are limited. MTSAT continuously monitors the generation, movement (direction and speed) and intensity of typhoons.
The animation shows an imagery of typhoon NABI (0514) captured by MTSAT.
