Sun Interference(Sun Outage) in Autumn 2010

The sun passes behind a satellite as seen from its ground station once a day during equinox season. When this happens, radiation from the sun can cause loss or degradation of communications between the satellite and the ground station. This kind of sun interference can distort images or interrupt their transmission

Sun interference is expected this year as follows:

  • F03: October 5 - 11, 2010

Equinox Operation in Autumn 2010

Likewise, the sun and the earth can lie in approximate line with a satellite during equinox season. When this happens, sunlight entering the satellite's imager-sensor can adversely affect the sensor's calibration quality and cause deterioration in the image data. To avoid this, the imager-sensor is controlled to avoid observing near-sun-areas; consequently, earth images have a chipped area.

Operation for this year is scheduled as follows:

  • (1) Observations cancelled (shown with "XXXXX (red box)" in the table below).
        F15: August 25 - September 2, 2010
  • (2) Other than the observations above, parts of some images at F14, N14, F15 and N15 from August 23 until October 17, 2010 will be chipped to avoid the influence of solar light on the imager (shown with "XXXXX (yellow box)" in the table below).
